After moving to a new city, twelve-year-old Mal inadvertently upsets Posada Middle Schools most popular student, violates the schools dress code with her punk rock look, and disappoints her mom in the process. Her dad, who now lives a thousand miles away, says things will get better as long as she remembers the first rule of punk: be yourself. But being yourself isn’t easy for Malu who struggles to feel like she can be the perfect senorita her mom wants her to be, and the punk she feels she is.
